Result, 21 October 2026: Tampa Bay beat Vegas 6–2 at T-Mobile Arena after the teams finished the first period tied 2–2. Anthony Cirelli's two goals in the second period gave the Lightning the separation; Victor Hedman added another before the break, and Nikita Kucherov made it 6–2 early in the third. The official NHL box score records only 21 Tampa Bay shots on goal against 34 for Vegas. That contrast makes the outcome more interesting than the four-goal margin alone.

Where the game turned

The first period offered little warning of a comfortable Tampa Bay finish. Brandon Hagel opened the scoring on a power play at 4:11. Ivan Barbashev answered for Vegas at 13:16, John Carlson put the Lightning back ahead 48 seconds later, and Mark Stone's short-handed goal at 18:30 sent the teams to the intermission level. Four goals and two changes of the lead left neither side in control on the scoreboard.

Cirelli changed that in a concentrated spell rather than through a slow accumulation. His first goal came at 6:44 of the second period, with Kucherov credited with an assist. At 10:09 Cirelli scored again, this time unassisted, to move Tampa Bay from 2–2 to 4–2 in three minutes and 25 seconds. Hedman's goal at 17:56 widened the gap to three before Vegas could take a response into the intermission. Kucherov then scored at 5:16 of the third. The decisive sequence was therefore the middle period: three unanswered Lightning goals turned a competitive opening into a result Vegas had to chase.

What the shot count does—and does not—say

Vegas put 34 shots on goal, 13 more than Tampa Bay, yet scored only twice. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 32 saves on those 34 shots, while Carter Hart was credited with 15 saves on 21 Tampa Bay shots. The difference in goaltending outcomes and Tampa Bay's finishing made a large contribution to the margin. Kucherov also had a direct hand in three Lightning goals: assists on Hagel's opener and Cirelli's first, then the final goal himself.

But shots on goal are not a complete measure of chance quality. The official total does not, by itself, tell us whether Vegas owned the more dangerous attempts, whether Tampa Bay created cleaner looks, or whether every goal was preventable. The safer conclusion is narrower: Tampa Bay made its limited shots count and Vasilevskiy gave the Lightning room to protect and extend their lead. That is strong evidence for how this game was won, not proof that the same conversion rate can be repeated every night.

What the result changes

For Tampa Bay, the useful lesson is the response after Stone's late first-period equalizer. Cirelli restored the lead, doubled it quickly and prevented the 2–2 scoreline from becoming an extended test of patience. For Vegas, the 34-shot total is a reason not to reduce the defeat to an inability to get pucks on net. The sharper question is why that volume produced only two goals while the Lightning scored six on 21. Answering it fully would require a closer review of shot locations and defensive breakdowns, not the final score alone.

The match page carries the verified 6–2 final, and readers can browse more ice-hockey coverage. This result belongs first to Cirelli's second-period burst, Vasilevskiy's 32 saves and a Lightning attack that converted a small shot total into a decisive advantage.
