Swift’s second year with Ben Johnson should be judged in the first few steps

D’Andre Swift enters another season in Ben Johnson’s offence with the Bears. NFL.com’s 6 September report describes his confidence in that continuity after years of changing systems. Our view is that the potential improvement should appear in timing and decision-making, not necessarily in a spectacular increase in raw speed.

Understanding changes when a runner commits

A running back can know the diagram and still be a fraction late reading how the blocks develop. Familiarity may help him distinguish a crease that is about to open from one that only looks available before a defender closes it.

That is where we would look for Swift’s progress. Does he maintain the intended path long enough to influence the defence? Does he make one decisive cut once the leverage is clear? Extra hesitation can turn a sound block into an apparent failure because the defender has time to recover.

The line and the back share the result

It would be misleading to attribute every gain or loss to Swift alone. The runner’s decision and the blockers’ angles interact. A cut away from the expected lane can expose a lineman who was moving the defender exactly where the original design required.

Our preferred evaluation would consider whether the whole group recognises the same opportunity. A modest gain made on schedule may be more encouraging than a long run rescued from a broken play, particularly when the offence needs reliable distances for the next down.

What would make continuity valuable

The benefit should extend beyond carries. A back who recognises his passing-game responsibility quickly can help the quarterback trust a protection or an outlet. That can keep the offence from having to advertise a different intention whenever the personnel changes.

We are cautiously positive about the continuity argument, but preseason confidence is not proof of a transformed season. The opening games should show whether Swift is making fewer unnecessary adjustments before reaching the line and whether the offence stays ahead of difficult passing situations. The most persuasive improvement may look ordinary: a clean read, a decisive step and a useful gain that leaves the next call available. That is a stronger foundation than waiting for a highlight to demonstrate that the system has become familiar.
