San Francisco 49ers 23–17 Washington Commanders, final, Monday 19 October 2026. Christian McCaffrey ran for two one-yard touchdowns and Brock Purdy found George Kittle for another as the 49ers built a 20–3 half-time lead at Levi's Stadium. A third-quarter field goal made it 23–3. Jayden Daniels then threw two touchdown passes, but Washington's last possession ended with a sack. San Francisco stayed unbeaten at 6–0. The NFL game centre confirms the final and quarter scores; the Commanders' postgame report details the comeback.

The score was close at the end, but the game's central contrast was not one between two equally steady attacks. San Francisco created a cushion by solving early downs and extending drives. Washington spent most of the night trying to recover the possessions it had already lost.

Why the early lead mattered

Purdy's opening drive included two third-down conversions before his touchdown pass to Kittle. After a Washington field goal, a 54-yard Mike Evans catch-and-run helped move San Francisco deep into Commanders territory. Purdy converted a fourth down with his legs and McCaffrey finished from a yard out. The missed extra point left the score 13–3 rather than 14–3, but the sequence illustrated how the 49ers kept their offense on the field.

Washington had opportunities that did not become touchdowns. One drive reached the San Francisco 13 before a fourth-and-two failure; another ended in a punt after a McCaffrey fumble gave it the ball back. McCaffrey later capped a 14-play 49ers drive with his second one-yard run. The Commanders' official account credits San Francisco with 303 offensive yards to Washington's 90 in the first half. Purdy completed 17 of 22 throws for 214 yards before the break. Those figures make the 20–3 interval score less a fluke than a record of sustained field-position and conversion pressure.

Washington's rally was real, not cosmetic

There is a strong counterargument to calling the result comfortable. The Commanders outgained the 49ers 224–72 after half-time, according to their team report. Daniels finished with 300 passing yards and two touchdowns on 29 completions. On an 11-play drive, he connected with Stefon Diggs for a fourth-and-five conversion and then a touchdown. After the defense forced a three-and-out, Daniels found Rachaad White for a nine-yard score. San Francisco did not score in the fourth quarter.

Yet Washington still needed another successful possession. A fourth-and-three throw near the 49ers' goal line went incomplete after the Commanders had reached San Francisco's 17. Their defense gave Daniels one final chance, but the last play was a sack. The late offensive improvement exposed a vulnerability in San Francisco's ability to close a game with its own attack. It did not erase the cost of the opening half or the 49ers' final defensive execution.

What the result means: San Francisco's 6–0 record was preserved by a layered win rather than four quarters of offensive dominance. McCaffrey's short finishes and Purdy's early conversions supplied the margin; the defense made that margin last when the offense stopped adding to it. Washington can point to a legitimate second-half response, but the comeback also shows why a 20-point deficit leaves so little room for another stalled fourth down. Follow the verified match result; our earlier 49ers–Rams analysis offers a separate example of San Francisco winning a different game through defensive leverage.
