Cam Jurgens to Ravens: what the Eagles trade changes on both lines
Baltimore traded for Cam Jurgens to restore a natural centre to an injury-hit line; Philadelphia accepted future picks because Drew Kendall had made the succession plan credible.
The Baltimore Ravens acquired Cam Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round pick from the Philadelphia Eagles on 7 October 2026, sending back a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. The trade is best understood as Baltimore paying for positional certainty while Philadelphia converts a difficult line reshuffle into future capital.
The NFL transaction log confirms the move. Both clubs also announced the same exchange, while Baltimore said Jurgens is in concussion protocol. That medical uncertainty matters: this is not an instant guarantee that the Ravens' protection problems disappear this week.
Baltimore bought a centre, not a patch
Baltimore's need had become structural. The Ravens placed Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic on injured reserve, while Danny Pinter was already unavailable. First-round guard Vega Ioane had therefore been asked to move to centre. Ioane may have managed the emergency, but keeping him there would have weakened two positions at once: the Ravens would still lack an established centre and would lose the rookie's value at guard.
Jurgens changes that geometry. His strongest NFL work came at centre after he succeeded Jason Kelce in Philadelphia, and he earned two Pro Bowl selections with the Eagles. If cleared, he lets Baltimore return Ioane to right guard, keep John Simpson at left guard and build the interior around players in their more natural roles. That should help the offence communicate protections, pass off twists and create cleaner double-teams in the run game.
The attraction is longer than one injury cycle. Baltimore says Jurgens is under contract through 2029. A 27-year-old centre with that control can become part of the line's next phase, not merely a rental until the injured players return.
Why Philadelphia accepted the disruption
The Eagles' side looks more uncomfortable because the move followed Lane Johnson's retirement and because Jurgens had already moved from centre to left guard after Landon Dickerson went on injured reserve. Trading another experienced lineman appears to increase immediate risk.
Philadelphia's calculation is that Drew Kendall has made centre less of a problem. The club said Kendall has played well there, allowing Jurgens' value to be measured against the rest of the line rather than against an empty position. The likely short-term group is younger, with Willie Lampkin and Kendall among the players asked to hold the interior together.
The return explains the gamble. A 2028 second-round pick is meaningful capital, and the 2027 fifth-rounder improves the exchange even after Philadelphia sends a seventh-round selection the other way. The Eagles also cited salary-cap flexibility and now hold 16 selections across the 2027 and 2028 drafts before compensatory picks. It is the same long-view roster logic behind other major quarterback and contract decisions, including our analysis of Tampa Bay's balance around Baker Mayfield: expensive continuity is useful only when it fits the next version of the team.
The counterargument is real
Baltimore has paid before knowing when Jurgens will clear protocol, and recent form is not the same as his Pro Bowl peak. Philadelphia moved him away from centre this season, and the line around him was already changing. A new scheme and a return to his natural position may help, but neither automatically restores earlier performance.
The Eagles also assume Kendall's early work will survive a larger sample and that a young line can protect the offence now. If that assumption fails, the distant second-round pick will offer little comfort during the 2026 season.
What the trade means
The deal gives Baltimore the cleaner football fit: a proven centre allows the rest of the interior to settle. Philadelphia receives the stronger asset return and more financial room, but accepts greater short-term volatility. The sensible verdict is therefore conditional. If Jurgens clears protocol and stabilises Baltimore's calls, the Ravens solved a genuine roster problem. If Kendall holds the middle in Philadelphia, the Eagles turned a displaced starter into premium future value.
