Confirmed final: Newcastle Jets 2–4 Shanghai Port

Shanghai Port beat Newcastle Jets 4–2 in the AFC Champions League Elite on 3 November. ESPN’s completed match record, checked at 09:55 UTC, confirms the final score.

Newcastle’s response meets a late answer

Leonardo headed Shanghai ahead in the 23rd minute from Prince Ampem’s cross. A Thomas Aquilina own goal in the 26th minute made it 2–0, before Ampem finished Leonardo’s through ball in the 51st minute.

Newcastle responded through Patrick Wood in the 58th minute, assisted by Alex Badolato following a corner; VAR confirmed the goal. Xavier Bertoncello’s 80th-minute finish from Zach Clough’s assist reduced the gap to one.

Li Xinxiang scored Shanghai’s fourth in the 86th minute from Yang Xi’s through ball. That late goal restored a two-goal margin after Newcastle had threatened to recover from 0–3.

The final numbers

Shanghai finished with 14 attempts, five on target, and 54.1% possession. Newcastle had 12 attempts, three on target, and 45.9% possession.

Our reading is that Newcastle made the second half competitive without completing the recovery. The timing of Shanghai’s fourth matters: it came six minutes after Bertoncello had brought the hosts within one goal. Both Leonardo and Ampem contributed a goal and an assist.

The Jets’ official pre-match report placed this fixture fourth in a five-game, 14-day stretch, providing the preparation context for the home side’s demanding schedule.
