Milan vs Benfica prediction: control the transitions, or Benfica can turn San Siro

Match preview — 16 September 2026: Milan host Benfica at San Siro in the opening round of the UEFA Europa League league phase. Kick-off is 21:00 CAT on Wednesday. Our prediction is a narrow Milan win, with 2–1 the score lean, but the call depends on the home side controlling the transitions rather than simply having more possession.

The central question: can Milan keep the match out of the open field?

Rúben Amorim identified the problem in Milan's official pre-match conference. He said Benfica can vary their play, use the wings and create rotations. In the same briefing, he argued that Milan need long spells of possession and must avoid a constant end-to-end race if they are to place Luka Modrić in the best conditions.

Those points belong together. Modrić can change the direction of an attack and find the pass before Benfica's defensive block settles. He is less useful if every Milan attack ends with both full-back zones exposed and the next possession becomes a sprint. The home side's first job is therefore not to force an early chance. It is to finish attacks in positions from which they can counter-press.

That means the width around Modrić matters. If Milan's wide players receive with support behind them, they can pin Benfica back without leaving the centre empty. If both sides of the shape advance at once, Benfica can bypass the first reaction and attack the space next to Milan's centre-backs.

Benfica's rotations are the reason the prediction is close

Marco Silva's recent comments after Benfica's 3–1 win over Gil Vicente offer a useful warning. In the club's official review, he said the team's pressing timing was not at its best and explained how Gianluca Prestianni could create from inside, the left or the right. That flexibility can disturb a defence because the marker who follows Prestianni risks opening a lane for Vangelis Pavlidis or another runner.

The official UEFA squad list includes Prestianni, Pavlidis, Rafa Silva, Jhon Durán and Andreas Schjelderup among Benfica's attacking options. It is a list of registered players, not a confirmed starting XI. The important point is the range: Benfica can use a fixed striker, a forward dropping between lines or a winger arriving inside after the full-back has been drawn wide.

Milan's safer response is to pass runners between midfield and defence instead of allowing one defender to be dragged across the pitch. Benfica will still find moments to isolate a player near the box. Milan must make those moments arrive after a settled attack, not immediately after losing the ball with the team stretched.

Team news: what is verified and what is not

No starting line-up was confirmed at our 00:18 CAT check. Benfica's official training update said Alexander Bah took part without restrictions, while Gabriel Índio worked with the B team. UEFA lists the available squads, but selection remains a decision for matchday.

Amorim said Omari Hutchinson is ready and could start, while refusing to reveal his line-up. That creates a real choice rather than a confirmed change. Hutchinson can add carrying power and pressure on the outside; a more conservative midfield would give Milan greater protection when an attack breaks down.

Our prediction: Milan 2–1 Benfica

UEFA notes that Milan are unbeaten in six previous meetings with Benfica, with four wins and two draws, including the 1963 and 1990 European Cup finals. History does not decide Wednesday's match, but San Siro and Milan's ability to choose when to accelerate give the home side a slight edge.

We expect Benfica to create enough movement to score, particularly if Prestianni receives between Milan's midfield and defence. The difference should be Milan's capacity to slow the game after a dangerous spell and then use Modrić, Christian Pulišić or Gonçalo Ramos to attack a more settled Benfica block.

Prediction: Milan 2–1 Benfica. Confidence is medium-low because the line-ups were not confirmed and both teams have the personnel to change the match from the bench. A draw becomes the stronger alternative if Milan cannot protect the centre after losing possession.
