Leverkusen 0–1 Marseille: Gouiri ends the perfect start
Amine Gouiri’s 77th-minute winner gives Marseille their first league-phase points and ends Leverkusen’s run of three wins without conceding.
Marseille beat Bayer Leverkusen 1–0 at the BayArena on 5 November, with Amine Gouiri scoring the only goal in the 77th minute.
The moment that broke the deadlock
The official Bundesliga match blog describes Leverkusen losing possession during their build-up before Gouiri advanced from the left and curled his finish into the far top corner. The match had been goalless at half-time.
Leverkusen had opportunities to respond. Edmond Tapsoba headed wide from close range shortly after the goal, and Patrik Schick was denied by the goalkeeper in the closing moments.
Opposite starts, a changed picture
UEFA’s pre-match briefing recorded three wins and no goals conceded for Leverkusen, against three defeats for Marseille. This result gives the French side their first three points and leaves Leverkusen on nine after four fixtures. It also ends the hosts’ perfect defensive record in this league phase.
Our analysis: the decisive distinction was what happened after possession changed hands. Leverkusen’s earlier results made their control a central pre-match theme, but one lost ball gave Gouiri the opening that settled this contest. Their late chances show that the match remained recoverable; Marseille’s clean sheet ensured that the breakthrough remained decisive.
