Hong Kong Open results: Cirstea and Eala win in straight sets
Sorana Cirstea defeated Mary Stoiana 7–5, 6–1, while Alexandra Eala beat Tereza Valentova 6–4, 7–6. Thursday’s other confirmed winners were Sönmez, Shubladze and Ružić.
5 November: Cirstea widens the margin against Stoiana
Sorana Cirstea defeated Mary Stoiana 7–5, 6–1 at the Hong Kong Open on Thursday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 15:26 UTC (17:26 CAT), confirms completion and Cirstea as the winner.
After taking the opening set by two games, Cirstea conceded one game in the second. Our reading: the widening set margin distinguishes this finish from the close opening set. It establishes a straight-sets win without requiring claims about tactical changes that the score alone cannot verify.
5 November: Eala finishes against Valentova in two sets
Alexandra Eala defeated Tereza Valentova 6–4, 7–6 at the Hong Kong Open on Thursday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 13:26 UTC (15:26 CAT), marks the match completed and identifies Eala as the winner.
Eala took the opening set by two games, then closed the second in a tiebreak. Our reading: winning that tiebreak allowed her to finish in straight sets after the second set had reached six games apiece. This report does not infer service breaks or rally tactics from the set scores.
5 November: Sönmez closes out Stojsavljevic in two sets
Zeynep Sönmez defeated Mika Stojsavljevic 7–6, 6–4 at the Hong Kong Open on Thursday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 10:56 UTC (12:56 CAT), marks the match completed and identifies Sönmez as the winner.
The opening set required a tiebreak, while Sönmez won the second by two games. Our reading: finishing that close first set mattered because she then needed only one more set to complete the win. The score supports that sequence without establishing the serving or rally patterns behind it.
5 November: Shubladze recovers after the opening-set tiebreak
Alexandra Shubladze beat Elena Pridankina 6–7, 6–1, 6–3 at the Hong Kong Open on Thursday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 09:26 UTC (11:26 CAT), confirms the match is completed and identifies Shubladze as the winner.
After losing the opening set in a tiebreak, Shubladze conceded four games across the next two sets. Our reading: the five-game second-set margin was the strongest separation in the scoreline, and the three-game deciding-set margin completed the recovery. The scoring record does not establish the tactical changes behind those margins.
5 November: Ružić wins the deciding set against Wang
Antonia Ružić defeated Wang Xinyu 6–3, 4–6, 6–2 at the Hong Kong Open on Thursday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 08:56 UTC (10:56 CAT) on 5 November, marks the match completed and identifies Ružić as the winner.
Wang recovered from losing the opening set to level the match. Ružić then conceded two games in the decider, her widest set margin of the match. Our reading: the third set is the clearest separation in the scoreline, after Wang’s second-set response had kept the contest open.
4 November: Sakkari recovers against Joint
Maria Sakkari defeated Maya Joint 4–6, 6–3, 6–3 at the Hong Kong Open on Wednesday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 13:26 UTC on 4 November, confirms the completed match and Sakkari as the winner.
Joint took the opening set, but Sakkari won each of the next two by three games. The repeated three-game margins show a sustained recovery across both remaining sets. Sakkari turned a one-set deficit into a win with two clear set margins.
4 November: Sasnovich wins the deciding-set tiebreak
Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated Talia Gibson 6–1, 5–7, 7–6 at the Hong Kong Open on Wednesday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 11:56 UTC on 4 November, marks the match completed and Sasnovich as the winner.
Gibson recovered from losing the opening set by five games to force a decider, taking the second set 7–5. The final set reached a tiebreak before Sasnovich completed the win. Our reading is that the changing set margins matter: the opening-set advantage did not translate into a straightforward finish, and the decisive separation came only at the end of the third set.
4 November: Liu defeats Boulter 7–5, 6–4
Claire Liu beat Katie Boulter 7–5, 6–4 at the Hong Kong Open on Wednesday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 10:56 UTC on 4 November, confirms the match is completed and identifies Liu as the winner.
Liu won each set by two games, finishing without a deciding set. Our reading is that the repeated narrow margins show how little separated the players in games won within each set, while Liu converted both sets into a completed victory. The score does not identify the break points or serving patterns that produced those margins.
4 November: Stojsavljevic wins the deciding set
Mika Stojsavljevic beat Sofia Kenin 6–3, 4–6, 6–4 at the Hong Kong Open on Wednesday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 08:56 UTC on 4 November, marks the match completed and Stojsavljevic as the winner.
Kenin levelled the match by taking the second set, but Stojsavljevic won the decider by two games. Our reading is that the result shows a successful response after losing the middle set; the set scores alone do not establish the tactical changes behind that response.
4 November: Ružić finishes in two sets
Antonia Ružić defeated Alina Charaeva 7–6, 6–4. The same source confirms completion and Ružić as the winner. After a first-set tiebreak, a two-game margin in the second allowed her to finish without a deciding set.
3 November: Eala defeats Jones 6–4, 6–3
Alexandra Eala beat Emerson Jones 6–4, 6–3 in the Hong Kong Open first round on Tuesday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 13:25 UTC (15:25 CAT) on 3 November, marks the match completed and Eala as the winner.
Eala won 12 of the match’s 19 games and finished in two sets. That establishes a completed opening win; the score alone does not identify the serving patterns or rally tactics behind it.
3 November: Gibson closes out Oliynykova
Talia Gibson defeated Oleksandra Oliynykova 7–6, 6–1. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 08:25 UTC (10:25 CAT), marks the match completed and Gibson as the winner. After a first-set tiebreak, Gibson conceded one game in the second set.
3 November: Sönmez wins in straight sets
Zeynep Sönmez defeated Dayana Yastremska 6–4, 6–2 at the Hong Kong Open on Tuesday. ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 07:55 UTC (09:55 CAT) on 3 November, marks the match completed and Sönmez as the winner.
Sönmez won 12 of the match’s 18 games. The second-set margin widened from two games to four, allowing her to finish without a deciding set.
2 November: Boulter, Sakkari and Sasnovich advance
Katie Boulter beat Viktorija Golubic 6–2, 7–6 in Hong Kong on 2 November, taking the second-set tiebreak 7–2. Maria Sakkari also advanced, defeating Carol Young Suh Lee 6–1, 6–4, while Aliaksandra Sasnovich beat Katie Volynets 6–3, 6–2.
ESPN’s tournament record, checked at 09:55 UTC (11:55 CAT) on Monday, marked all three matches as completed and identified Boulter, Sakkari and Sasnovich as the winners.
Different routes through in straight sets
Boulter needed a tiebreak to finish her second set. Sakkari followed a five-game first-set margin with a closer second set, while Sasnovich conceded five games across her two sets.
Our reading: completing the job in two sets avoids the extra work of a deciding set. Boulter’s tiebreak was particularly consequential, closing out a set in which the players had reached six games apiece. The scoring record supports that comparison, although it does not show which tactical changes shaped the rallies.
The tournament context
The WTA’s official overview lists Sakkari as fourth seed and Boulter as eighth seed in the 2–8 November tournament. Hong Kong is an outdoor hard-court WTA 250 with 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Sorana Cirstea, Alexandra Eala and Leylah Fernandez head the published seed list.
Next-round start times depend on the updated order of play. This page retains the original Boulter report and adds the latest confirmed results.
