Brentford vs Chelsea: set-pieces could interrupt Alonso’s counters

This is an opinion before the match, not a confirmed team selection or a promise of a result.

Why the style of the chances matters

Brentford's detailed match preview says its side had produced 30 shots from set-pieces through four league games and nine shots inside the six-yard box, both league-leading totals in the categories cited there. Chelsea had ten shots and three goals on the counter, also a league-leading figure in the club preview. Those are not interchangeable measures of overall quality: they point to two ways this derby can be pulled out of a normal midfield rhythm.

Brentford have often made an attacking action matter before the opponent can settle into its preferred possession shape. If they win a free-kick or corner after drawing Chelsea toward one side, the second ball can be more important than the first delivery. Chelsea's problem is not merely to have tall players in the box. They must assign the next zone after the initial clearance, because a half-cleared set-piece can create the short, central shot that Brentford's profile suggests they seek.

Chelsea have the corresponding route in open play. If Brentford commit players to their attacking restart and lose the second ball, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers can receive into space while João Pedro offers a central finishing or linking option, subject to selection. The Brentford preview describes those three as combining for eight goals and six assists so far this season. But naming an attacking trio is not the same as explaining a goal: a counter needs a first pass away from pressure and a runner who keeps the far side available. Watch whether Chelsea can make the second pass before Brentford's rest defence recovers.

Possession alone could mislead us

The club preview puts Brentford at 46 percent average possession and Chelsea at 44 percent, while citing Brentford's 17 shots per 90 and Chelsea's six shots on target per 90. Those early samples make a useful warning against assuming Chelsea will control this derby simply by holding the ball. They also should not be turned into a guarantee of goals: averages across four matches do not say how many clear chances one specific opponent will allow.

Brentford were unbeaten after their first four league fixtures and Chelsea had seven points, one more than the hosts, according to the same preview. Chelsea's 2–2 home draw with Hull last weekend illustrates the risk of turning attacking output into a preordained win; Brentford's unbeaten start is not proof they have already solved every defensive transition. Both teams have an argument, and both have an identifiable phase they must protect.

The selection uncertainty changes the forecast

The final line-ups were not confirmed when this analysis was written. The Premier League's Gameweek 5 guide describes João Pedro as an injury doubt. We will not label him fit or ruled out on the strength of a fantasy-football prompt. The same applies to a predicted 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1 for Xabi Alonso: Brentford's preview presents both as possibilities, not an official team sheet. If João Pedro does not start, Chelsea may still counter, but the central connection and who occupies it need a fresh reading.

Our Chelsea lean therefore depends on a forward line able to convert recoveries into shots without leaving too much space for Brentford to attack the next dead ball. The strongest counterargument is not that Brentford will necessarily dominate possession. It is that one well-worked set-piece or one missed Chelsea clearance can change the match before Chelsea's transitional advantage has enough repetitions. A score draw would not surprise us, and a narrow Chelsea victory is a preference rather than a certainty.

Look for the ratio of Brentford's deliveries to shots after second balls, and for Chelsea's first forward pass after regains. A prediction that ignores those decisions would explain little once the score arrives.
