A useful Simmons role in Sacramento starts with a narrower job description

A reported one-year agreement creates an opportunity. Our view is that a clear, repeatable role would be more useful than asking Simmons to recreate an earlier career version.

NBA.com reports that Ben Simmons has agreed to a one-year deal with Sacramento. Our focus is how a defined role could work.

Start with the possession, not the reputation

We would resist building an argument around what a player once represented. The useful question for any new arrival is which specific possession types he can improve now. A role that asks for five different solutions may be less productive than one that establishes two reliable contributions.

For Simmons, our proposed evaluation would begin with advancing the ball after a defensive stop and connecting the next action when the initial attack is covered. Those responsibilities can be assessed directly: does the ball arrive sooner, does the receiver gain an advantage, and does the possession continue without an unnecessary reset?

The lineup must leave somewhere to go

A facilitator is only as useful as the choices available around him. If teammates occupy overlapping spaces, an early pass can merely transfer the problem. We would want clear separation between the player moving towards the ball, the runner attacking the rim and the receiver maintaining width.

That does not require every possession to become a fast break. When the defence is set, a short sequence of screen, handoff and relocation can still force a defender to choose. The aim is to put the passer inside an action, rather than leave him surveying five opponents who have already found their assignments.

Judge a role before expanding it

Our preferred approach would establish a manageable group of minutes and tasks before adding complexity. That is a basketball assessment, not a medical claim or a prediction about availability. The relevant evidence will be how the combinations function in actual games.

If those minutes produce connected possessions and credible defensive assignments, the role can grow. If they consistently compress the offence’s space, the surrounding combination may need to change even when the individual passing is accurate. Sacramento should be looking for useful current basketball, not a symbolic restoration. A modest role executed well can help a team more than an ambitious one that requires every condition to be perfect.

Questions from the stands

What role would we favour for Simmons in Sacramento?

A defined connector role: advance the ball after stops and keep the next action moving, with teammates maintaining distinct spaces. That is our proposed usage, not a confirmed team plan.

Women’s World Cup and the NBA build-up

France’s pressure, Belgium’s passing and Italy’s defensive choices offer contrasting routes through tournament basketball. Alongside the women’s World Cup, we look ahead to the Knicks’ title defence and the NBA bench combinations that can keep an offence working.
