USA 108–56 Hungary: 31 assists spread the scoring burden
The USA reached the Women’s World Cup semi-finals with a 108–56 win over Hungary. Their 31 assists and five double-figure scorers give the next opponent several problems to solve.
The United States beat Hungary 108–56 in Berlin on 10 September to reach the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup semi-finals. FIBA’s completed game record shows a 36–12 opening quarter and a 59–30 half-time lead. The result was settled well before the final quarter.
The more useful detail for the next round is how widely the scoring work was shared. FIBA reports 31 assists and five players in double figures, with Napheesa Collier named player of the game after 19 points and six rebounds. The USA made 40 of 68 field-goal attempts, including 12 of 23 from three-point range.
Make the help defender choose
Our interpretation is that the assist total gives the next opponent a more demanding preparation question than simply identifying a leading scorer. Sending an extra defender toward the ball can leave another American available; staying attached to every receiver can leave the initial defender without help.
The defensive answer needs coordinated movement. The nearest player can interrupt a drive, but someone behind that help must cover the newly available receiver. A late second rotation makes the first intervention much less useful. The final statistics show successful shared production; they do not establish which defensive coverage Hungary used on every possession.
There is also a limit to projecting this margin forward. Shooting 12 of 23 from distance is a high rate to reproduce, and the USA’s earlier 55–52 escape against Italy remains relevant. Our next test is whether the Americans can keep generating useful second options when more of the first shots miss and the score stays close.
