Three first-half goals settle the derby

Athletic Club beat Real Sociedad 2–1 at San Mamés on 1 November. Iñaki Williams opened the scoring in the 14th minute from Nico Williams’s through ball. Luka Sucic equalised after 30 minutes with a left-footed shot from outside the box, before Alex Berenguer converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time. The completed ESPN record confirms the final result; Real Sociedad’s official match listing also records the 2–1 score.

The lead holds despite Sociedad’s larger share of the ball

Real Sociedad finished with 62% possession, 14 attempts and five shots on target. Athletic recorded 13 attempts and three on target. Our reading is that the possession difference should not be confused with a decisive advantage in the number of shooting opportunities: the overall attempt count was separated by only one.

Berenguer’s penalty established the final margin before the interval. The absence of further goals confirms that Athletic protected that advantage, but it does not establish that the second half was comfortable. Sociedad’s on-target count supplies a reason to avoid that assumption.

What the result tells us

The strongest conclusion is concrete: Athletic took the derby through a first-half scoring sequence and a clean second half. Explaining that outcome requires the goals and the chance data together, rather than using possession alone as a verdict on either performance.
