Houston’s next step with Amen Thompson is to make every cut a decision for the defence
Thompson’s extension settles the long-term commitment. Our basketball question is how Houston can turn his movement into space for the whole lineup.
Houston has signed Amen Thompson to a five-year extension. The commitment makes his long-term role a central basketball question.
Movement can create spacing
Our preferred use of a dynamic off-ball player is not to leave him waiting in the same perimeter spot while another teammate works. A cut can force a help defender to choose between following the movement and staying available to protect the ball side.
The timing is crucial. Cutting before the ball handler has a view can crowd the lane without offering a pass. Cutting after the help defender has committed can create a brief but valuable opening. We would want Thompson’s movement linked to the passer’s position, rather than driven only by his own opportunity to accelerate.
A screen can begin another action
There is also value in using him as a screener who does not remain stationary after contact. A slip, short roll or immediate change of angle can place him in a position to finish or make the next pass. These are proposed options, not a claim that Houston has announced a new playbook.
The surrounding lineup determines which version makes sense. If another player is already occupying the same interior space, the movement may require that teammate to relocate. Off-ball activity is useful when it rearranges the defence; two attackers arriving in the same lane can make defending easier instead.
Our development benchmark
We would judge progress by the number of possessions in which Thompson’s action improves a teammate’s next decision, even when he does not score. Does his cut remove the low helper? Does his screen force a switch that the offence can exploit? Can he receive on the move without having to stop and survey a reset defence?
A long contract should not make every possession a demonstration of individual star status. Our view is that a larger role can be built through more connected actions, not simply more time holding the ball. The most valuable version of the next step would make Houston harder to organise against throughout the possession, while preserving clear space for the final attack.

Questions from the stands
What should Houston develop around Amen Thompson?
Our proposal is coordinated cutting and screening that moves help defenders and creates a useful next pass. A larger role need not mean more stationary possessions with the ball.
