His escape was remarkable; the service pressure that made it necessary deserves attention before the next round.
How Michelsen created the problem
The official match report describes Michelsen combining aggressive baseline play with approaches to the net on second-serve points. He broke Tiafoe six times in the latter's first 12 service games.
Our reading is that the forward movement mattered because it reduced the time available for Tiafoe's next decision. A server preparing only for a baseline exchange also has to find a passing shot when the receiver advances. Protecting the second serve therefore involves placement and a prepared next ball, as well as pace.
What the comeback establishes
Michelsen served for the match at 5–4 in the third set and led 3–0 in the fifth, according to the same report. Tiafoe recovered both times. That demonstrates an ability to keep competing through a deteriorating score; it does not establish that his early service pattern will withstand a different returner.
The counterargument is that solving problems during a match is itself a major strength. Tiafoe has earned that credit. Our next test is whether he can make his opening service games less vulnerable while retaining that adaptability. The quality of the first ball after a pressured return will be more revealing than confidence inferred from this result.
