Laver Cup 2026 score: Tien ties Team World 3-3 after Day 2 opener
Learner Tien beat Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 for two points, erasing Team Europe’s Day 1 lead and tying the Laver Cup at 3-3.
Learner Tien beat Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 in the opening match of Laver Cup Day 2, earning two points for Team World and tying the overall score at 3-3. The score is current after Match 5 on Saturday, 26 September 2026; Alexander Zverev against Alex de Minaur was in progress when this update was checked at 18:57 CAT.
Why one win erased Europe’s advantage
Team Europe led 3-1 after Friday, when every match was worth one point. Casper Ruud survived Francisco Cerundolo in a match tiebreak, Rafael Jodar beat Alexander Bublik in straight sets, and Carlos Alcaraz partnered Jakub Mensik past Bublik and Taylor Fritz. Brandon Nakashima supplied Team World’s only point by beating Mensik.
Saturday changes the arithmetic because each victory is worth two points. Tien therefore did more than win the first match of the day: he cancelled Europe’s entire two-point cushion in 95 minutes. That scoring structure is the central fact for anyone asking for the current Laver Cup score. A team can play the better opening day and still lose control in the first match of Day 2.
Tien took the first set 6-3, but Cobolli answered 6-2 in the second. The match tiebreak then became the decisive phase. Tien reached 10-7, converting a match that had swung sharply in both directions into the two points Team World needed to level the contest.
Tien’s recovery was the competitive signal
The most useful interpretation is not that Team World suddenly became favourite. It is that Tien prevented Europe from carrying Friday’s momentum into the higher-value part of the event. Losing the second set could have made the match tiebreak a test of survival. Instead, he reset quickly enough to make the final phase about execution rather than the previous eight games.
The counterargument is that a 3-3 score exaggerates the importance of one match because Saturday still contains three more two-point contests. That is true mathematically, but it strengthens the strategic point. Tien ensured that Zverev, Alcaraz and the European doubles pair could not play from the comfort of an established lead. Every remaining Saturday matchup now has the power to create a two-point separation.
What comes next at the Laver Cup?
Zverev versus de Minaur followed Tien’s win. Carlos Alcaraz is scheduled to face Taylor Fritz, before Ruud and Zverev meet Bublik and Nakashima in doubles. The official Laver Cup page listed those matches as live or upcoming at the time of publication.
Sunday raises the value again to three points per victory, and the first team to reach 13 points wins. That means Saturday is not merely the middle day. It decides which side can enter the final session needing control rather than a comeback.
At 3-3, neither team has that advantage. Europe’s deeper Friday contribution remains relevant, but Team World has already demonstrated how quickly the format can punish a lead that is not extended. Tien’s win made the scoreboard level; the larger consequence is that it made every remaining selection and matchup more expensive.
