Paulo Fonseca begins his Sporting tenure against a Moreirense side with two successive wins. Recent victories across competitions have not erased Sporting’s home league setbacks.

Sporting CP host Moreirense at the Estádio José Alvalade on Saturday, 7 November, at 20:30 Lisbon time/GMT/UTC (21:30 CET; 22:30 CAT). The club’s official preview identifies the match as Paulo Fonseca’s debut in charge.

Overall form and home form tell different stories

Sporting have won their last three matches across three competitions: the League Cup, the league and the Champions League.

Their two most recent home league games, however, brought a 2–2 draw with Arouca and a 2–1 defeat by Académico de Viseu. Moreirense arrive after beating Estoril 3–1 and Estrela da Amadora 2–1.

What the new coach has available

Sporting’s preview reports Rodrigo Zalazar is available as an option again, while Nuno Santos and Zeno Debast continue recovering from injuries. Fonseca has selected his starting side but had not disclosed it in the pre-match briefing.

The first measure of progress

Our analysis: the immediate test is whether Sporting can combine their attacking ambitions with better defensive control at home. The recent winning sequence matters, but it spans different competitions and does not remove the problems shown in those two league results at Alvalade.

Moreirense’s consecutive victories give this debut a competitive context. Implementing a new coach’s ideas and dealing with an opponent in winning form are connected tasks, rather than separate stages of preparation.
