SCHEDULED RMA VS INT

The Champions League opens this week. The first result should not dictate the whole campaign.

An eight-opponent league phase rewards a plan for different kinds of match. Early urgency is useful; treating September like a knockout tie is not.

The 2026/27 Champions League league phase begins on 8 September. UEFA’s fixture list includes Real Madrid–Inter on Tuesday, Liverpool–Atlético and Napoli–Arsenal on Wednesday. The competition’s match system gives each club eight different opponents in single-leg league-phase games.

One game, two horizons

Our view is that the format asks coaches to manage two separate horizons. There is the immediate match, with its particular opponent and score. Then there is the wider run of games, in which travel, player availability and the distribution of opponents change what the same point might mean. A team cannot know that wider picture perfectly in September, so dramatic conclusions after one night are especially fragile.

This does not make opening games disposable. It means that a coach should be able to explain a late tactical decision in terms of the match actually being played. Adding another attacker can be sensible when the structure still protects against a counter. Removing the protection merely because an opening-night draw feels emotionally unsatisfactory is a different calculation.

Prestige is not a tactical instruction

A famous opponent can make a fixture feel bigger before the ball moves. It does not tell a team where the spaces will be. The productive preparation remains specific: where is the first safe pass under pressure, which defender can be drawn out, and who controls the second ball when an attack breaks down?

The same discipline should apply to a supposedly comfortable fixture. Assuming that reputation will produce control is an easy way to give an opponent a simple plan. Early possession without depth can be harmless; an aggressive attack without protection can hand the underdog a route towards goal.

Look for repeatable advantages

The strongest opening performance is not necessarily the one with the largest score. We would value a side creating similar kinds of good opportunity against different defensive responses, recovering its shape after losing the ball, and changing its approach without becoming disjointed.

Our opening-week judgement will be provisional. We will distinguish a repeatable pattern from an isolated finishing burst and a controlled draw from an anxious one. That is not an attempt to make the result unimportant. It is how the result becomes useful evidence for what comes next.

Champions League opening week

A fast opening will mean little if the distances stretch afterwards. The Champions League opener is a test of how Liverpool change gears together.
