Brewers beat Pirates 5–1 and clinch NL Central: Misiorowski set the terms

Result update — 16 September 2026, 06:19 CAT: Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh 5–1 at PNC Park. Jacob Misiorowski worked five scoreless innings, and the Brewers later clinched a fourth consecutive National League Central title when Atlanta completed a 6–3 win over the Cubs.

Misiorowski made the original prediction hold up

Our preview leaned Milwaukee if Misiorowski started because his strikeouts could reduce the number of defensive decisions needed behind him. He did start, struck out the side in the first inning and finished with seven strikeouts, one walk and five hits allowed across five scoreless innings. MLB's official box score records 62 strikes from 82 pitches.

The outing was not five innings without pressure. Pittsburgh collected five hits, including three in the fourth, but did not turn them into a run. Misiorowski's most important work was therefore not simply generating strikeouts. It was reaching for a missed bat or a controllable out when a ball in play could have changed the inning.

That is where the first-inning tone mattered. Konnor Griffin, Brandon Lowe and Bryan Reynolds all struck out, forcing Pittsburgh to begin the night from behind the speed of the fastball. The Pirates did adjust enough to make later contact, yet they never joined that contact to a decisive hit while Misiorowski was on the mound.

The sixth inning separated a close game from the final score

Milwaukee led only 1–0 after five innings. Luis Lara's second-inning sacrifice fly had scored Jake Bauers, but Pittsburgh remained one swing from drawing level. The game changed after Misiorowski's work was complete.

In the sixth, Gregory Soto walked Brice Turang and William Contreras before a wild pitch and another walk forced home a run. Lara then doubled in Contreras, and Joey Ortiz singled home Christian Yelich and Lara. Four runs arrived in a sequence built from both control failure and contact: two walks created the traffic, the wild pitch moved it, and the bottom of Milwaukee's order converted it.

That distinction matters for the result. Misiorowski gave Milwaukee five scoreless innings, but the Brewers did not win because one starter made the rest of the game automatic. They won because the offence converted Pittsburgh's worst relief inning before the lead had to survive late pressure.

Pittsburgh had hits without enough connection

The Pirates finished with ten hits to Milwaukee's eight, yet scored only once. Brandon Lowe's 30th home run, off DL Hall in the eighth, accounted for the run. Pittsburgh left ten runners on base and went through the first seven innings without scoring.

The hit totals therefore require context. A team can produce more contact and still lose when that contact is distributed across innings rather than concentrated around extra-base damage. Milwaukee's sixth did the opposite: the walks, wild pitch, Lara double and Ortiz single arrived close enough together to multiply one another.

What the NL Central title changes

MLB's post-game report records Misiorowski's major-league-leading ERA falling to 1.89 and his strikeout total rising to 243. The win moved Milwaukee to 94–57. Atlanta's 6–3 victory over Chicago then completed the clinching scenario, which MLB confirmed in its official division-title video.

The title is Milwaukee's fourth in a row and fifth in six years. It also changes the management problem for the remaining regular-season games. The Brewers are still pursuing postseason position and the best record in baseball, but Misiorowski has now thrown a career-high 166⅓ innings. Protecting October readiness without allowing competitive sharpness to fade becomes more important than chasing every possible regular-season inning.

Our verdict after the result

The prediction was directionally correct, but the final score came from two different advantages. Misiorowski controlled the first five innings; Milwaukee's lower order punished Pittsburgh's sixth-inning control failure. Treating the 5–1 result as only a showcase for velocity would miss the inning that actually created the margin.

Original prediction, published 15 September: we leaned Milwaukee if Misiorowski started, without giving an exact score, and said the useful live question was whether early strikes would make Pittsburgh commit before hitters identified the pitch they wanted. The completed result supports that premise while also showing its limit: Pittsburgh still made contact and outhit Milwaukee, but could not connect those hits into runs.
