Andreeva needs purposeful variety against Gauff, not a different shot every time

Mirra Andreeva advanced past Anastasia Potapova 5–7, 6–4, 6–3 at the US Open. Potapova’s late fall and treatment affected the ending, and it would be wrong to describe the final points as a clean tactical verdict. Before that interruption, the WTA’s report identified a renewed willingness by Andreeva to move forward after losing the opening set.

The approach has to earn the volley

Our reading is that forward movement gives Andreeva a useful alternative when baseline exchanges stop producing separation. But moving closer to the net is not automatically attacking well. A short approach down the wrong line can turn an excellent passer into the player with the easier decision.

Against Coco Gauff in the quarter-final, the important question is what happens before Andreeva leaves the baseline. Has the preceding shot pulled Gauff off balance? Is the reply likely to arrive from below net height? Does Andreeva have time to cover the most natural passing angle? Those conditions make a net visit a plan instead of a gamble.

Variety should create a predictable reply

There is a temptation to treat variation as an end in itself. It is more valuable when one change makes the opponent’s next response easier to anticipate. A higher, deeper ball might push the opponent back; a shorter angle might draw her forward. The point is to create a particular opening, not display every available shot in a single rally.

Gauff’s defensive reach makes that distinction especially important in our view. An opening that would be sufficient against another player may need a second preparation shot here. Andreeva should still take opportunities, but rushing the final direction change could surrender the patience that created the opportunity in the first place.

Our assessment

We see a credible route for Andreeva if her variation changes Gauff’s position rather than merely the ball’s appearance. The warning sign would be frequent net arrivals after neutral approaches, followed by difficult first volleys. We would judge those sequences by the setup, not blame the volley alone.

Her compassion towards Potapova was a separate and welcome part of the previous match. It should not be confused with evidence about the next result. The tennis question remains specific: can Andreeva make Gauff defend from inconvenient locations often enough to stop her turning retrieval into control?
