Perth’s national swimming return can turn home familiarity into a real test

Swimming Australia has confirmed national events in Bunbury and Perth for 2027. The 3 September announcement brings the open-water championships back to Koombana Bay and the national short-course championships to Perth. Our view is that the most valuable outcome would be a better competitive opportunity for swimmers who usually have to travel to find one.

Hosting does not automatically produce faster athletes. It can remove part of the distance between a developing swimmer and a demanding race, but the race still needs to become useful evidence. The question is what athletes and coaches learn from meeting the national field.

Familiar surroundings should support an ambitious race

A local swimmer may arrive with fewer unfamiliar arrangements and a clearer sense of the venue. That can simplify preparation. It should not become an excuse to judge the performance by a separate, more forgiving standard.

Our preference is for a specific racing objective: execute the opening as planned, maintain the intended turn sequence or stay competitive through a difficult middle section. A result then becomes something that can guide the next block of work rather than merely confirm that the occasion felt special.

There is also a useful opportunity for clubs to watch how national-level swimmers organise warm-up, marshalling and successive races. Observation is not a substitute for coaching, but it can make the demands of a major meet less abstract.

Open water requires a different kind of familiarity

Returning to Koombana Bay does not mean repeating identical conditions. The course and the race-day environment must still be assessed through the organisers’ information and the event’s safety arrangements. Familiarity should encourage better attention, not complacency.

In sporting terms, a swimmer needs to decide where to sit in the group and when to spend energy moving. Our preference would be a plan that preserves options around turning points and the approach to the finish, while remaining adaptable to the actual field and conditions.

The legacy should be visible after the medals

The announcement creates an opportunity, not a completed development programme. We would look for clubs to translate the event into subsequent participation and more demanding local racing. A packed championship weekend matters less if the pathway becomes distant again immediately afterwards.

Our judgement is positive but conditional: bringing national competition to Western Australia can broaden access and sharpen the standard local athletes can see and experience. Its success should eventually be measured in the quality of those continuing opportunities. The venue supplies the meeting point; the sporting progress comes from what swimmers do with the contest and the feedback it provides.
