West Ham part with Nuno as Noble joins temporary coaching group

West Ham United have confirmed that Nuno Espírito Santo has left his role as men’s first-team head coach with immediate effect. The club announced the decision on Tuesday, 3 November, following a review of its start to the Championship season.

Who takes charge for Cardiff?

Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will temporarily oversee squad preparations for the away match at Cardiff City on Wednesday, 4 November. Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have also departed.

In its official statement, West Ham said recruitment of a new head coach was underway. The statement did not confirm a permanent successor.

A promotion campaign needs a response

Sky Sports reported that West Ham were eighth after 13 Championship games, four points outside the automatic promotion places, following consecutive home defeats to Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.

That context makes Cardiff an immediate test of the team’s response. Our assessment is that the temporary staff’s first task is to give the players clear instructions for the next match while the club makes its longer-term decision. A change of coach alone does not establish that the promotion problems have been solved.
