Torreense 1–2 Sunderland: Sadiki's late finish completed a hard-earned comeback
Torreense led through Volnei Feltes, but Jules Ahoka's header and Noah Sadiki's added-time half-volley gave Sunderland a 2–1 Europa League win in Leiria.
Sunderland came from behind to beat Torreense 2–1 in Leiria on 15 October 2026. Volnei Feltes put the Portuguese side ahead in the first half. Jules Ahoka headed Sunderland level after the break, and Noah Sadiki struck in added time from Granit Xhaka's lay-off. It was Sunderland's second win in two Europa League league-phase matches, but the result is more useful as an account of how a difficult away game changed than as evidence of an easy victory.
A lead that made Torreense's plan credible
UEFA's matchday account describes Feltes surging from near his own half before scoring from distance in the 36th minute. A centre-back producing that sort of finish is not a repeatable attacking plan. It did, however, give Torreense something more valuable for the remaining hour: a lead to defend. UEFA's match-centre verdict says the Portuguese side defended with discipline while Sunderland had much of the first-half control. Possession or territory alone did not force Torreense to abandon their shape.
There is a reason the hosts should not be reduced to an upset footnote. Torreense are playing in Portugal's second tier, but they arrived having beaten Lillestrøm away in their opening Europa League match. Sunderland's own pre-match account explained that Torreense's domestic cup win had earned the Portuguese club this European place. A team that had already won on the road could plausibly trust its defensive plan after taking the lead in Leiria. The difference between the clubs' domestic divisions did not settle the contest.
Two different actions turned pressure into goals
After halftime Sunderland's problem was to create something clearer than general pressure. UEFA reports that Torreense goalkeeper Lucas Paes denied Nilson Angulo before Ahoka met Nordi Mukiele's delivery with a downward header. That equaliser mattered because it came from a specific service-and-finish sequence, not simply from having more of the ball. It also removed the protection Torreense's lead had given them.
The winner arrived by another route. In the 93rd minute, Xhaka's touch gave Sadiki room to meet the ball on the half-volley and finish past Paes. UEFA's live account records the Xhaka assist and the timing. Calling this a late breakthrough is precise; calling it inevitable would be wrong. Torreense had kept Sunderland out for most of the evening, and the match was still level entering added time. Their midfielder João Marques told UEFA that they had dropped too deep in the second half. His assessment supports a reading of increasing Sunderland pressure, though it does not prove any single adjustment caused both goals.
What the win means, and what it does not
Sunderland's opening 1–0 win over AZ Alkmaar and this comeback leave them with six points from their first two league-phase games. Torreense remain on three after winning at Lillestrøm. Those are promising and damaging starts respectively, not final judgements on who advances: UEFA's league-phase schedule still gives each club six more matches. Sunderland next visit Lech Poznań on 22 October, while Torreense travel to Ferencváros on the same date.
For Sunderland, the encouraging part is the range of their response: Mukiele's cross supplied a headed equaliser, then Xhaka and Sadiki combined centrally for a winner. The caution is that they needed an exceptional finish in stoppage time after trailing a well-organised opponent. For Torreense, Feltes's spectacular goal and a long spell of resistance were real achievements, even if the final minutes exposed the cost of spending too much time defending near their own box. This was a comeback Sunderland earned, not one Torreense simply handed them.
