Tonga 20–18 Samoa: Fonua-Blake answered the comeback, Katoa supplied the margin

Samoa overturned a ten-point deficit, but Tonga found the final scoring response. Both sides now turn to confirmed World Cup semi-finals.

Tonga beat Samoa 20–18 at CommBank Stadium on 1 November. Addin Fonua-Blake’s late try brought Tonga level before Isaiya Katoa’s conversion restored a lead they protected to full time.

The lead changed; Tonga still had an answer

The NRL match report records Tonga leading 8–4 at the interval and 14–4 after Jojo Fifita’s second-half try. Samoa responded through Brian To’o, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Ronald Volkman to move 18–14 ahead.

Our interpretation is that the result rewards the response to that reversal as much as Tonga’s earlier control. Building a lead and recovering after losing it are different problems. Fonua-Blake’s direct carry supplied an immediate route back to parity; Katoa’s kick made that response decisive.

The closing chances explain the narrow margin

Samoa still threatened late. Sua Fa’alogo was denied by the sideline, and a final attacking opportunity ended with a forward pass. A two-point win should therefore be read as a contest Tonga survived, rather than evidence that Samoa’s comeback lacked substance.

The semi-final appointments are confirmed

The tournament organiser has confirmed New Zealand–Tonga in Newcastle on 7 November and Australia–Samoa in Sydney on 8 November. Both men’s games start at 20:05 AEDT: 09:05 UTC and 11:05 CAT.

For Tonga, the next challenge is reproducing that composure against a new opponent. Samoa’s attacking recovery remains useful evidence, but the next match will also demand that they finish the opportunities which decide a close game.
