Madrid beat Inter 2–1, but more chances would not have solved every problem

Real Madrid opened their Champions League campaign with a 2–1 win over Inter. The club’s match report records goals from Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde inside the opening 23 minutes, followed by Carlos Augusto’s reply in the 76th. Our conclusion is that Madrid should review their missed chances and their defensive exposure as two distinct questions.

The first can explain why the score remained close. It cannot automatically explain why the opponent was able to threaten. A team may create enough opportunities to deserve victory while still making the match less controlled than it needs to be.

Finishing is one review, transition is another

The official account describes several further Madrid chances and important saves by Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez. Those opportunities support the argument that the home side could have increased its lead. We would still resist treating a hypothetical third goal as a complete tactical solution.

The players behind an attack must be ready if the shot is saved or the final pass is cut out. A promising forward movement can leave too much distance between the nearest midfielder and the covering defenders. If the opponent can use that distance, the quality of the previous chance does not protect the next phase.

Our assessment therefore asks two separate questions: was the final action good enough, and was the team positioned to respond if it failed? Improving one without the other can produce a more prolific side without producing a more reliable one.

Mourinho’s own account complicates the comfortable-win story

In his post-match comments, José Mourinho acknowledged the open nature of the contest and stressed the importance of Thibaut Courtois. We read that as a reason to examine the repeated defensive situations, not merely celebrate the goalkeeper’s ability to solve them.

A strong goalkeeper is part of a team’s quality. Depending on difficult saves as the normal answer is a different proposition. The useful review should identify whether the same route gave Inter access more than once and whether Madrid’s recovery positions could have reduced that access.

We do not have a verified expected-goals breakdown here, so assigning a precise statistical measure to either side’s opportunities would add unsupported detail.

Our takeaway from the opening win

Madrid have the points and evidence that their attacking players can create against a demanding opponent. The next improvement should preserve that threat while making the moments after a broken attack less generous.

Our judgement is that the win deserves credit without being presented as complete control. Better finishing might have made the evening more comfortable. Better support behind the attack is what could make the next similar evening more dependable, even when the third goal does not arrive.
