Pakistan and England meet in the second match of the 2026 ODI tri-series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday 20 October. The Pakistan Cricket Board lists a 1pm Pakistan-time start, which is 10am in Zambia. At a 09:55 CAT check, the ICC match centre marked the fixture live and reported that England had elected to field. That is a toss decision, not a result. Readers looking for a changing score should use the official match centre rather than a static analysis page.

Why the first innings matters

Pakistan arrive with a completed win in this same tournament. Their official account of the 18 October opener records 305 against Sri Lanka, Salman Ali Agha's century and a 37-run victory. That is evidence of a batting side capable of building a substantial total at Rawalpindi; it is not proof that the same conditions or scoring pattern will repeat against England. England's decision to field creates an immediate test of whether their attack can prevent a similar platform.

The most interesting contest may be between England's returning bowling options and Pakistan's ability to preserve wickets for the later overs. The ECB's 16-player squad announcement says Adil Rashid is fit again after a hand injury and Sam Curran has returned from a groin injury. Rashid offers a different middle-overs question to pace alone, while Curran adds another route through the innings. Both are in the squad; the squad announcement by itself is not confirmation of either player's selection in this match.

There is a counterweight to the idea that England's depth automatically settles the game. The ECB says Jofra Archer was rested and Jos Buttler missed the trip with a hamstring injury. Harry Brook captains a group that also includes Joe Root, Ben Duckett and Will Jacks, but three squad members—Mason Crane, Henry Crocombe and James Coles—were uncapped in ODIs when named. A strong-looking list of options still has to become a coherent XI and adapt to the surface and the chase. We should not turn those uncertainties into a prediction.

What is at stake in the tri-series?

This is England's first match of a seven-game competition involving Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The ECB schedule places England against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on 22 October, then against Pakistan again in Lahore on 25 October. A final is scheduled for 31 October in Lahore. Pakistan already have one win; England have the opportunity to establish their own position, but the round-robin schedule means today's result will not, by itself, decide the title.

One useful way to read the match is to separate known facts from developing evidence. Pakistan's 305 against Sri Lanka shows what happened two days earlier; it does not set a target today. England fielding first tells us the toss outcome; it does not tell us whether the decision was right. The first innings will reveal far more about this particular pitch, England's balance and Pakistan's response than either team's recent headline form.
