Andreas Almgren won the men’s New York City Marathon on his marathon debut on 1 November, finishing in 2:06:01. Sheila Chepkirui won the women’s race in 2:24:36, according to Associated Press reporting.

What the debut establishes

Our assessment is that a debut victory answers the immediate question of competitiveness over the distance. It does not yet establish the pattern of a marathon career. Future races will test how an athlete reproduces a performance under different conditions, fields and preparation cycles. The result is the achievement to recognise today; longer-term comparisons require more evidence.

For readers tracking the mass-participation race, these elite results are separate from individual runners’ finish records. Use the organiser’s results service to look up a specific participant.
