McIlroy’s Irish Open defence should begin with patience, not a replay

The DP World Tour confirms Rory McIlroy’s return to defend the Irish Open title, with the 2026 event moving to Doonbeg. Our preview begins with that change of setting. A memorable finish at one course is part of the story, but it is not a strategy for a different course.

Do not let the occasion select the shot

A home crowd can make an attacking option feel emotionally correct before it is tactically correct. The player still has to assess the lie, the landing area and the penalty for missing. Our preferred approach would be to let those practical questions determine the target, while treating the atmosphere as energy rather than instruction.

That does not mean playing cautiously throughout. A powerful player can use length to create shorter approaches, but only if the chosen line leaves a manageable next shot. The opportunity is to select the holes where distance meaningfully improves the chance of scoring, rather than use maximum force as a statement of intent.

The forecast must remain conditional

We would place McIlroy among the players with a credible chance to contend, but not declare a successful defence inevitable. The final field, conditions and his actual ball-striking during tournament play will matter more than the label of defending champion. We are not assigning odds or suggesting a betting edge.

The counter-case to a patient approach is that a soft, low-scoring setup may reward sustained aggression. If the course offers accessible targets with limited punishment, an overly defensive plan could surrender too much ground. Patience therefore means waiting for the right opportunity, not refusing opportunities that genuinely exist.

What to look for in the opening round

We would watch the shots immediately after an imperfect drive or a missed birdie putt. Those moments reveal whether a player is following a stable plan or trying to compensate emotionally on the next swing. A safe recovery that preserves par can be more encouraging than a spectacular rescue that depends on a very narrow margin.

Our judgment is that a disciplined opening would strengthen McIlroy’s title defence more than a handful of isolated highlights. We would become more optimistic if his misses remain playable and his approach decisions preserve several routes to a good score. Reproducing last year’s emotion is optional; building another four-round opportunity is the essential work.
