Rashford can give United a derby outlet—but the first pass has to reach him
United's transition threat against City should begin with a supported escape from pressure, not a hopeful ball towards an isolated runner.
The Manchester derby is scheduled for 13 September at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford enters the week after winning United supporters' player-of-the-match vote against Everton. That recognition does not settle selection, but it offers a timely question: how could United use his threat if City control long spells of possession?
The escape needs a supporting player
Our proposed route is to avoid asking the first forward pass to do everything. A direct ball towards Rashford can be useful, but if he receives alone with a defender close and no nearby teammate, United may surrender possession before the rest of the side can move up.
A short supporting connection changes the sequence. The receiver can set the ball back, draw the defender forward and then attack the space behind. That allows speed to be used against a moving defence rather than require a runner to beat a prepared opponent from a standing start.
City should defend the supply as well as the runner
For City, simply dropping the back line deeper can protect the space behind but leave more room for United's midfield to receive. We would prefer pressure on the player making the first pass, provided the defenders behind that pressure remain connected.
If the passer has time to look up, the defensive line needs to respond early. If the passer is forced backwards, City can hold a more aggressive position. The decision should follow the ball's condition, not a fixed instruction to be brave or cautious throughout the match.
United must still offer a possession game
There is a danger in making transition the entire plan. A team that cannot keep the ball after escaping spends the next phase defending again. United should have an option to slow the move and retain possession when the break is not genuinely available.
Our conditional forecast is that United can trouble City if their first two passes after a regain are controlled and supported. If every recovery becomes an immediate, isolated sprint, City may be able to recycle pressure too comfortably. Rashford's potential influence therefore depends on the structure around him as much as on his individual acceleration. The final teams and any midweek fitness developments should be checked before treating this as a player-specific matchup.

Questions from the stands
How could Rashford influence the September Manchester derby?
If selected, we would use him within a supported transition rather than as an isolated outlet. The first two passes after United regain the ball should create a moving defence for him to attack.
