Man City 5–1 AEK Athens: Foden's hat-trick answered the one warning City received
Phil Foden scored three as Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5–1. AEK's second-half goal briefly exposed a risk, but Rico Lewis and Rayan Cherki helped City seize control again.

Result, 20 October 2026: Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5–1 at the Etihad Stadium in the UEFA Champions League league phase. Phil Foden scored a hat-trick, Elliot Anderson opened the scoring and Rayan Cherki supplied the response after Stavros Pilios had cut City's lead to 2–1. The score suggests an uninterrupted procession. The more useful reading is that City built an advantage, allowed AEK a route back through a counterattack, then showed several ways to restore control. Foden finished the moves, but the service and the timing of the third goal explain why the brief warning did not become a comeback.
City had more than one route to the first two goals
Anderson's 12th-minute opener came from a second ball, not a long passing sequence. Enzo Fernández struck a free kick against the bar after Floyd Samba had been fouled near the area; Anderson reacted to the rebound and scored his first City goal. Allan then hit the woodwork from the left edge of the box. Those incidents mattered because AEK could not simply survive by keeping City away from one preferred combination. Set-piece pressure and a shot from distance had already threatened before the second goal arrived.
For that goal, Rico Lewis and Foden combined at close range. The UEFA matchday account describes their one-two, while City's official report records Foden's finish in the 34th minute. It was the first illustration of Lewis making a direct attacking contribution from his position rather than merely helping City circulate possession. With a 2–0 half-time lead, City had earned a cushion; they had not removed every risk.
AEK's goal made the response the decisive passage
Pilios scored in the 52nd minute after a sweeping AEK counterattack. That is a meaningful qualification to any claim that City had complete control throughout. A side which commits players forward can still be exposed when an opponent escapes into space, and AEK's move turned a comfortable score into a one-goal contest. The goal did not prove that AEK were about to equalise, but it did demand a response before the visitors could build on it.
Cherki supplied one within five minutes. He took a pass from Foden inside the box, used a drag-back to create his shooting angle and finished for 3–1. The sequence was important because City did not need to wait for a speculative long-range effort or another set piece. One incisive exchange restored a two-goal margin. Lewis then helped create Foden's second goal in the 65th minute, and substitute Ryan McAidoo crossed for the hat-trick finish in the 76th. UEFA named Foden player of the match; the record supports that choice without erasing the part played by Lewis, Cherki and the substitute.
What the five goals mean, and what they do not
Enzo Maresca made eight changes from City's previous match against Ipswich, according to the club report. Getting contributions from Samba, Allan, Anderson, Lewis and McAidoo while still winning a Champions League game is a concrete sign of useful depth on this night. It does not establish that every rotated selection will be as effective against a stronger press or a more clinical counterattacking side. AEK found a moment after half-time, and City's first two goals also included a rebound and a close-range combination rather than a single repeatable attacking pattern.
The result gives City six points from their first three league-phase games, UEFA's results list confirming a second win. AEK remain on three. City's next European assignment is RB Leipzig on 4 November, while AEK host Real Madrid the same day, according to UEFA's fixture list. Those dates are context, not a prediction about the next result. The immediate lesson is narrower: City briefly gave AEK a way back, then used Cherki's individual skill and Lewis's connection with Foden to make the warning temporary.
