Lindy Duncan is a Solheim rookie, not a beginner at competitive golf

Lindy Duncan arrives at the Solheim Cup at Bernardus as a captain’s selection and a first-time participant. The official US announcement notes 14 top-25 finishes across her last two LPGA seasons. Our view is that the word rookie should describe her experience of this event, not erase her experience of professional competition.

A debut creates unfamiliar demands: a different team environment, match-play decisions and an audience responding to every shift in momentum. Those demands are real. They do not mean the player has never handled a difficult approach, an important putt or a disappointing start before.

Give the task a clear shape

We would want captain Angela Stanford to communicate what the chosen role requires. In a partnered format, that includes how the pair will make decisions and what each player needs to know before committing to a shot.

Clarity matters more than a constant reminder that this is a first appearance. A player who understands the job can direct attention towards it. A player continually asked to manage the significance of the occasion may have less room to focus on the immediate sporting decision.

That does not justify inventing a pairing before it is announced. Our argument concerns the standard of preparation, whichever combination Stanford chooses.

Match play changes the target, not the need for judgement

The opponent’s position can make an aggressive shot more or less useful. If a rival is already in difficulty, a controlled option may be sufficient. If the opponent has a short birdie chance, the value of a more ambitious approach can increase.

The danger is treating every hole as a demand for maximum risk because the event feels intense. Our preference is for decisions that respond to the actual state of the hole, with a clear understanding between partners when relevant.

A missed putt should also be kept in proportion. It may lose a hole, but it does not automatically reveal an inability to handle the event. The next decision is better evidence than a sweeping conclusion drawn from one moment.

Judge the debut without writing its ending in advance

We expect Duncan’s professional experience to be useful, while recognising that the Solheim setting still has to be negotiated. Neither her age nor her debut status supplies a reliable prediction of the result.

Our judgement is that the strongest introduction will be a clear role, a committed approach and an honest review of each decision. If she plays well, it need not be framed as a surprise that a rookie could cope. If she struggles, the explanation should come from the golf, not merely from the label beside her name.
