Lille cannot defend Antony's left foot by forgetting the pass beside it

Lille host Real Betis on 8 September. Antony's tendency to move inside from the right onto his left foot is highlighted in UEFA's team guide. Knowing that preference is useful, but our view is that Lille will need to defend the surrounding combination rather than reduce the task to one fullback blocking one shot.

The inside route has more than one ending

A winger moving infield can shoot, but he can also draw a midfielder out and release a teammate. If Lille send help without checking the space that player leaves, the apparent solution can create the next problem. The supporting defender should close the useful passing angle while remaining able to recover.

We would want the fullback to delay the action without becoming square and easy to beat. The nearest midfielder can then help from a position that protects the centre. Two defenders arriving from the same direction make it easier for the attacker to use a short exchange and escape both.

Betis should make the outside route credible

For Betis, repeating an inward dribble against prepared cover would become predictable. An overlapping run can force the fullback to think about the touchline, even when the ball is not ultimately played there. A return pass after the defence shifts can then reopen the preferred inside lane.

Our attacking preference would be to vary the timing. Sometimes release the outside runner immediately; sometimes use that movement to carry inside; sometimes return the ball and attack the same area from a changed angle. The variation matters more than adding touches without changing the defender's decision.

Lille's response after the regain

Stopping the initial move is only half the sequence. If Lille win the ball and immediately give it back, Betis can attack an already stretched shape. The first receiver after a regain needs a safe supporting option, especially near the touchline where pressure can arrive quickly.

We expect this flank to influence the match if Antony starts, but the lineup remains subject to confirmation. Our judgement favours the team that keeps its supporting distances intact: Lille while defending the combination, Betis while trying to separate those defenders. The obvious left-footed shot is only the final possibility in a much larger contest.
