The Knicks’ title defence will ask who can create after the first action fails

The NBA has scheduled defending champions New York to open against Philadelphia on October 20. This is a preseason assessment, not a report of a game already played. Our central question for the Knicks is how comfortably their attack can find a second creator when an opponent takes away the first action.

The first advantage is only the beginning

A successful initial screen can force two defenders toward the ball. The next pass then determines whether that advantage survives. If the receiver pauses until the defence recovers, the offence must begin again with less time. If he can immediately drive, shoot or connect to another teammate, the original action has created a chain rather than an isolated opportunity.

That makes the supporting players’ decisions important even when the most prominent scorer has the ball. Their starting positions must leave passing lanes open. A cutter moving at the wrong moment can bring an extra defender into the exact space a teammate needs. Standing still is not automatically spacing, and movement is not automatically helpful.

Philadelphia’s test should be about choices

Our proposed counter for the Sixers would be to vary where the second defender comes from. Repeatedly sending help from the same place allows an offence to rehearse the release in real time. Changing the source of help asks the receiver to identify a new next pass, while still requiring the defence to recover coherently.

That is a tactical proposition, not inside information about either team’s playbook. Before final rotations and availability are established, a precise score prediction would imply more certainty than the evidence provides. The matchup is useful because it can reveal which lineups preserve decision-making when the preferred handler is pressured.

Our early call

We lean toward New York in the opener, with low confidence at this distance from tip-off. The championship supplies a reasonable starting case for their collective execution, not immunity from roster or form changes. We would revise the call if their supporting possessions repeatedly end in hesitation or if Philadelphia can force the ball away without conceding a clean second option. The most revealing sequence may not be the first successful play of the night. It may be the next possession, when the defence recognises that play and the Knicks have to show that their solution goes beyond it.
