Guardians 3–2 Rays: Halpin's swing mattered because Williams kept Game 3 close
Petey Halpin's fifth-inning homer overturned Tampa Bay's lead, while Gavin Williams' nine strikeouts gave Cleveland a narrow game its bullpen could finish.
ALCS Game 3 result — 15 October 2026, US time: The Cleveland Guardians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3–2 at Progressive Field and took a 2–1 lead in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series. Petey Halpin's two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth erased a one-run deficit. Gavin Williams struck out nine over five innings, and Cade Smith secured the save. The official MLB report confirms the result and series position.
Halpin provided the decisive picture, but Cleveland's route to victory was not a procession of hard contact. It was a small offensive return made sufficient by pitching. The Guardians scored once on Nathaniel Lowe's second-inning RBI double, fell behind on Chandler Simpson's two-run triple in the fourth, then reclaimed the lead on Halpin's swing off Griffin Jax. No later Cleveland run padded the margin. That sequence, recorded in MLB's official game story, is why the five innings Williams supplied and the final outs from the bullpen deserve to sit beside the homer in any account of the win.
One swing changed the score, not the whole explanation
Simpson's triple put Tampa Bay ahead 2–1 and showed that a single well-struck ball could undo several quiet innings. Williams did not leave with a shutout, but he kept the damage to two runs while collecting nine strikeouts. For Cleveland, that meant the gap was still only one run when Halpin came up in the fifth. A two-run homer could then change the leader outright rather than merely narrow a larger deficit.
Halpin turned on Jax's 96 mph sinker and sent it into the right-field seats. The power and timing were exceptional; treating the blast as the entire game would nevertheless miss the arithmetic that made it decisive. Lowe's earlier double had put a run on the board. Williams prevented the Rays from building beyond a 2–1 advantage. In a 3–2 game, each part of that chain carries weight.
This is also why the game should not be reduced to one pitcher's mistake. Jax's sinker was punished, but Tampa Bay's bigger problem was the limited scoring cushion behind it. The Rays managed two runs on two hits, as their manager Kevin Cash noted in MLB's account. Simpson supplied both runs with one blow, yet the rest of the lineup could not provide the additional hit that would have made Halpin's homer less final.
The bullpen had no margin to waste
Once Cleveland led 3–2, every Tampa Bay baserunner carried the tying run. Smith's eighth-inning strikeout of Yandy Díaz and his ninth-inning save, both shown in MLB's game sequence, turned Halpin's lead into an actual result. A dramatic go-ahead hit can dominate a highlight package; the final inning determines whether it survives in the scorebook.
There is a counterargument to any broad conclusion about the series: Tampa Bay did reach Williams for two runs, and a one-run loss does not show that its strong regular-season offence has vanished. Cash's own assessment was that the Rays need better at-bats and more hits. Cleveland, meanwhile, cannot assume that nine strikeouts from a starter and a clean late escape will recur every game. Game 3 reveals how the Guardians won this contest, not a guaranteed formula for the remaining games.
What the 2–1 series lead means
Cleveland is now two wins from the World Series, with the next game scheduled at Progressive Field. MLB lists Game 4 for Friday at 6 p.m. Eastern time but says it may move to 8 p.m. if the Brewers sweep the Dodgers; rain is another possible schedule factor. Readers should check the official playoff schedule before relying on a start time. The verified Game 3 result and local fixture details are on our Guardians–Rays match page.
For the wider series context, our Game 1 analysis explains how pitching kept Cleveland close enough for a late rally. Game 3 was tighter and ended differently: one fifth-inning swing put the Guardians ahead, and run prevention carried that advantage to the finish.
