Enric Mas should spend teammates before he spends his lead

After Vuelta stage 15, Enric Mas led Felix Gall by 2:06 and Primož Roglič by 2:10, according to Cycling Weekly’s September 6 classification. An individual time trial and summit finishes remain. Our view is that the leader’s best response is selective control: defend against the riders who can take the race, not every move that briefly looks dramatic.

The jersey changes the meaning of effort

A challenger may gain from making a stage difficult even if the first attack does not stay clear. Each acceleration can reduce the leader’s support and make the next decision more expensive. For Mas, matching every movement personally would accept the challengers’ preferred contest. The aim should be to keep teammates useful for as long as the threat allows.

That requires agreement before the attacks arrive. A rider well outside contention may be allowed room; a close rival cannot receive the same treatment. The size of a gap matters, but so do the riders in it, the terrain ahead and whether a teammate can close it without forcing the leader into repeated maximal efforts.

The time trial complicates patience

A lead cannot be defended only by observing the current classification. Different stages reward different strengths, and a time trial removes much of the shelter and tactical negotiation available in a group. We would not invent a precise time loss from reputation alone. A credible estimate would need current performance, course detail and conditions.

Without that information, the sensible approach is to preserve a buffer while avoiding speculative attacks that cost more than they gain. An opportunity to add time can still be valuable, particularly if it emerges from an existing advantage rather than an expensive attempt to manufacture one. Defensive riding is not the same as refusing every chance to improve the position.

Our final-week call

Mas is our provisional overall favourite because the lead is real and the challengers still have to remove it. Confidence is moderate, not absolute. We would revise that assessment if he becomes isolated early on successive decisive stages or if the time trial substantially changes the gaps. The most reassuring sign would be a team that lets harmless moves go, closes serious threats collectively and leaves its leader with one clear effort instead of six emergency responses. Winning from the front is a test of restraint as much as strength.
