Dortmund should use the crowd to accelerate the ball, not empty the midfield
Against Villarreal, the temptation will be to turn an energetic opening into an all-out charge. Dortmund need width and protection to advance together.
Dortmund’s official preview confirms Villarreal as their opening Champions League opponent on September 8. Our tactical view is that the home atmosphere should support a quick circulation of the ball, not encourage every available player to run ahead of it.
Width needs a partner inside
A winger receiving close to the touchline can stretch a defence, but the situation becomes predictable if there is no inside option. The full-back can then defend the outside route while a midfielder blocks the return. A supporting runner in the half-space changes the question: the defender must choose between holding width and allowing a combination through the inside channel.
Dortmund’s most useful attacking sequence would therefore involve movement around the wide receiver before he is forced into a duel. An overlap can be a decoy, an underlap can pull a marker, and a simple pass back can reset the angle. The value is in creating a decision for the defender, not collecting dribbles for their own sake.
The price of overcommitting
If both sides of the team advance simultaneously, Villarreal could find space beside a centre-back after a turnover. The midfielder protecting that area must be able to delay the first pass, not merely sprint after the next runner. That requires a starting position close enough to influence the transition.
Our counter-case is that excessive protection can leave too few players in the box. A wide advantage still needs a target and a second arrival. The balance should shift with the quality of the attack: commit more when the ball-carrier has time and support, fewer when he is already under pressure.
Our match verdict
We lean narrowly towards Dortmund at home, provided their wide attacks remain connected to midfield cover. We are not predicting an easy match or claiming that the stadium atmosphere supplies a tactical advantage by itself.
We would move towards a draw if Dortmund’s possession becomes a series of isolated wide duels and hopeful crosses. We would become more confident if their inside support forces Villarreal’s defenders to turn and exchange markers. The first twenty minutes should be judged by the quality of those connections rather than the volume of noise or the number of early attacks. Energy creates an opportunity; spacing determines whether the opportunity is useful.

Questions from the stands
What is the Dortmund versus Villarreal prediction?
Our editorial lean is a narrow Dortmund win. That depends on supported wide attacks and midfield protection; isolated dribbles and hopeful crosses would move the assessment towards a draw.
