Bayern should change the final action, not abandon everything before it

Bayern drew 0–0 at Schalke. The club’s analysis reports six clear-cut chances alongside a substantial territorial advantage. Our view is that a goalless result with genuine opportunities calls for a more precise response than simply demanding more attackers or declaring the possession ineffective.

Two problems can look identical on the scoreboard

A team that rarely reaches a useful shooting position has a creation problem. A team that reaches those positions and fails to convert them has a different problem, even though both can finish without scoring. Confusing the two can lead a coach to damage the structure that produced the opportunities in the first place.

There is still room for tactical improvement. Against a compact defence, the final pass should ideally arrive while a defender is moving, not after the receiver has stopped. A short combination near the edge of the box can pull one player out; a delayed run then attacks the space that movement leaves. Simply adding another body to the same crowded line may make the next pass harder.

Set pieces need more than volume

Bayern’s report also identifies a lack of decisive impact from corners. Our interpretation is that repeated restarts should be assessed by the first contact they create, not counted as pressure by themselves. A delivery that consistently meets a defender in a settled position is not becoming more dangerous merely because it is attempted again.

A changed run, a different delivery zone or a short option can force a new decision. The trade-off is protection behind the ball: chasing a breakthrough should not hand the opponent its easiest route to a chance.

Our forecast

We expect Bayern’s attacking output to recover more readily than the scoreline might suggest, because the reported chances indicate that the route to goal was not entirely missing. That is a directional judgment, not a guarantee of a large win in the next match.

The strongest objection is that a club’s own assessment may emphasise positives and understate how comfortably an opponent defended some attacks. We therefore separate the recorded result from our interpretation and would look for independent chance detail before claiming dominance in every phase. If Bayern continue creating clear opportunities, patience is justified. If future possession ends mainly in blocked, crowded attempts, the diagnosis must become more structural.
